MESSI FAILS TO ADD TO TALLY

Lionel Messi has been a constant thorn in the flesh of Real Madrid and he has a good attacking return to back this up. The El Clasico clash between Real Madrid and Barcelona is widely regarded as the most popular league match in the world and Messi always turn up for this match. The petite Argentine international skipper scored a lot of goals in the colours of Barcelona with Real Madrid on the receiving end.

Real Madrid fans would have heaved a sigh of relief when they avoided PSG in the Champions League round of 16 draw in December, but as fate would have it the draw was done again thus leading to the reunion of Messi and Real Madrid in addition to the transfer speculation involving KylianMbappe.

PSG finished second in their group and they were at home in the first leg as a result.The French Ligue 1 leaders were first drawn with Premier League team Manchester United before the round of 16 draw held in December 2021 was conducted again. The second draw led to the tie between PSG and Real Madrid. In the first leg, PSG needed a late goal from star player KylianMbappe to ensure that have a lead ahead of the second leg in Madrid next month.

PSG had a lot of chances in the first half of the first leg with  Angel Di Maria wasting the first opportunity of the game, while Mbappe was denied by Real Madrid shot stopper Thibaut Courtois after a fantastic pass from Messi. In the second half, Lionel Messi missed the best chance of the match after  his spot kick was saved by the impressive Courtois. PSG were awarded a spot kick after Mbappe was brought down by Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal in the box. Lionel Messi has a very good record of 26 goals in 46 games against Real Madrid, but he was unable to add to the tally from 12 yards out. Mbappe spared his blushes with a wonderful goal in the 94th minute to give his team a 1-0 lead ahead of the second leg.
